Irish Passports
Who can apply for an Irish Passport
To hold an Irish passport, you must be an Irish citizen.
If you are an Irish citizen, you can apply for:
A first-time passport
A passport renewal
You can apply to renew an Irish passport up to six months before it expires.
If you were born outside of Ireland to a parent who was born on the Island of Ireland before 2005, you are automatically an Irish citizen and are eligible to apply for an Irish passport.
If you were born outside of Ireland and at least one of your grandparents was born on the Island of Ireland, you can apply to become an Irish citizen by joining the Foreign Briths Register. Once you become an Irish citizen you may apply for an Irish passport.
How to Apply for an Irish passport
All passport applications are made online through the website of the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs.
Preparing to Apply for an Irish Passport
What you need to apply for an Irish passport depends on whether you are applying to renew an Irish passport or if you are applying for an Irish passport for the fist time.
If you are renewing an Irish passport that was issued more than 15 years ago your application will be treated like a first-time application, and you will need to submit additional documentation.
All supporting documents must be original. To be considered original, a document must be issued directly by a department of government. It does not need to be the document that was issued at the time of the life event (birth or marriage). Photocopies, scans or laminated copies are not accepted.
First time applicants and those renewing a passport issued more than 15 years ago must send supporting documentation to the passport office in Dublin, Ireland.
If you are required to submit physical photos standard American size passport photos are acceptable.
It is advised that you collect all supporting documents before you submit the online application.
